In the beginning, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on September 13, 2019, that the carcinogenic contaminant N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) has been discovered in the brand name Zantac (ranitidine), a common heartburn medication is accessible in both prescription and over-the-counter formulations. NDMA is a strong hepatotoxin in addition to causing cancer. Short-term NDMA exposure can harm the liver (such as liver fibrosis and scarring). Bladder cancer has the strongest relation to Zantac of all the cancers connected to it.

Soon after in April 2020 the FDA announced that all brand name Zantac heartburn medicines, both prescription and over-the-counter, should be withdrawn from the market immediately due to possible NDMA contamination, a chemical related to cancer. The reason for the NDMA contamination is still being researched. Scientific studies conducted during the time when Boerhringer Ingelheim and Sanofi developed and marketed Zantac revealed a definite link between ranitidine, the active ingredient in Zantac, and NDMA. When ranitidine comes into contact with water, a chemical reaction occurs, resulting in the creation of NDMA.

Despite the fact that this information was readily available, the drugmakers chose not to warn the government or consumers about the risk.  If you acquired one of the cancers listed above after using Zantac or Ranitidine contact us now!
